Remember the era before the 2014 Lok Sabha elections? That peaceful time when twitter wasn’t a place where public policy was debated between opposing political parties? Back when corruption was just accepted? Back when Modi was still looked at with suspicious glances by nearly everyone? Back when there weren’t any stupid labels assigned to people like ‘Bhakt’ or ‘Aaptard’ or ‘Presstitute’? Most importantly, back when all of us unanimously hated our “leaders”? I miss that.

These days, almost everyone is aligned with some sort of political party. And the worst part is that people start defending their choices violently. We have given so much power to our politicians, it’s insane. Politicians aren’t bands, who’s music you will defend till you die. We should judge politicians exactly the way Indian parents judge their kids – purely on the basis of their marks / performance. Why do we defend our politicians? It’s not like they need more clout. It’s not like they’ll gain/lose a seat if you successfully debate their holiness.

To me, the only relationship an elected official or a leader should share with his/her concerned population should be that of voting and criticism. The person who invented the idea of the ‘secret ballot’ was a genius. I’m sure they wouldn’t have predicted that some day something like the internet would exist where idiot humans would declare their preferences anyway. Use the ballot system to your advantage. No one can ever make you declare who you’re voting for. Why are you doing it anyway? It makes absolutely no sense. The only basis on which you would like a particular candidate would be that s/he is a hard worker and a good person, right? So just vote and shut the fuck up for a while. Wait and see what happens. If the person does well, vote for them again. If they don’t, then don’t. It’s really as simple as that. And even if you love a candidate’s work, then still hate on them. Find things to hate about them. Who gives a fuck? It’s not like they’re listening, at least people will start being critical of their officials and they absolutely should be.

Now I know some of you might want to help a certain candidate because you like them. There are two ways to do that:

  1. Vote for them.
  2. Join their Marketing campaign.

What I’m trying to say is that nobody, except for the politicians, benefits from defending politicians. If we start defending them, it means we’re hating each other instead of hating them. And politicians, by the nature of their job, NEED to be hated. That’s the only way the politicians are going to be careful of what they do. Don’t give them the liberty of getting away with their power with utter bullshit. I’m not saying all politicians are bad, they obviously aren’t, but that is the one place, unfortunately, you cannot give them a benefit of doubt. So just, stop worshiping your politicians, even if you fantasize about them. Just hate. It makes life easier.
